Propak Cape 2011 to exhibit improved packaging technologies that could help developing countries save food

In developing countries, the lack of packaging or inadequate packaging in distribution causes 30-50% of all food to decay before it reaches the consumer. By contrast, in Western Europe only 2-3% of produced food fails to reach the consumer. If the average losses in developing countries food supply chain could be reduced through the use of improved packaging from 40% to the European average of 2.5%, the energy consumption associated with food losses would be reduced by more than 50% while also increasing the availability of food. Propak Cape 2011, together with co-located shows FoodPro, Pro-Plas Expo, Pro-Label Cape and Print Expo, will showcase a number of packaging technologies that could improve the protective function of packaging and effectively counteract the premature perishing of foodstuffs.
